.chapter twenty-one.

Taylor stepped up to Kylie's front door. He rang the bell, stood back and waited for her to answer the door.

Inside, the sound of the doorbell brought Kylie back to reality. She put her hands on Zac's firm chest and pushed him away.

"Taylor." She whispered "Oh God."

She fled from the room as fast as she could. Zac sat back on the couch and ran his fingers through his hair. "Damn." He said. He couldn't believe he had just kissed his brother’s girlfriend... one of his best friends. He still didn't know what came over him, it was an impulse and he acted on it.

"Hey man." Taylor greeted him, entering the room with his arm wrapped securely around Kylie's waist. "What are you still doing over here?"

"I don't know. I'll leave though." He stood up and started walking out of the room, not making eye contact with Taylor or Kylie.

"Hey," Taylor reached out and grabbed his arm as he walked past. "Something wrong?"

Zac didn't look up. "No, I'm fine."

"Sure?"

He went against the voice in his head telling him not to look up, and raised his eyes to look at Kylie. He tried to read her expression but found it impossible. "Yeah." He said "I'll see ya later."

Taylor watched him leave the room with a concerned look on his face. "Did something happen before I got here?"

"No!" Kylie answered a little too quickly. "I mean, no, nothing happened."

"Oookay. So, shall we?"

"Shall we what?"

"Go up to your room?"

"Oh, um... my room... "

"Yes your room." He moved so he was standing in front of her now. "Don't tell me you forgot. I thought we had plans... "

"No I remember it's just... "

"Okay what happened with Zac, and don't lie to me."

Kylie looked up and into his eyes. She knew that if she lied to him he'd know. But then again all Zac did was kiss her and it meant nothing... to her at least... but why did she kiss him back then?

She averted her eyes. "Nothing happened."

Kylie watched out her front window as Taylor backed his car out of the driveway and drove off down the street. As soon as he was out of sight she ran out the front door and over to the Hanson's.

Jessie answered the door. "Oh, hey Kylie. Taylor just left."

"Oh, shoot." She played dumb. "Well is anyone else here?"

"Um, well Avie and I are watching tv in the den, Zac's up in his room... "
"Thanks Jess!" Kylie didn't stick around to hear who else was home and what they were up to. She burst into the house and flew up the stairs to Zac's room. She knocked on his door lightly.

"Who is it?"

"Jane." She decided to mess with him.

"Jane?"

"From down the street."

"Jane... " He said as if he was trying to remember her. "I don't think I know you. What are you doing in my house anyways?"

"Open your door and I'll show you."

This intrigued Zac so he dropped the shirt he was attempting to fold and went to open his door. "Kylie." He said upon seeing her. "Um, hi."

She watched as his cheeks reddened as a result of being caught wearing just a pair of boxers.

"Hi." She tried not to let them, but her eyes dropped to his broad chest anyways. "Um... I can let you dress... "

"No, it's okay. What'd you come over here for? Taylor went to the store."

"I know I - I came to... to um... well... I just... "

"You don't have to say it." He interrupted, "I know."

"You do?" She asked quietly

"Yeah. And I'm sorry, Ky. For messing with you the way I did. I know you love Taylor a lot and I didn't mean to confuse you. I just... I don't know what came over me but - "

"Wait." She held her hand up. "You think I'm mad at you for kissing me?"

"Well, yeah. I'm surprised you haven't kicked my ass yet."

Kylie shook her head. "No, Zac. That's so not it."

Zac grabbed her by the arm and pulled her into his room, shutting the door behind her. "Explain."

She twisted her hands together and looked up at him shyly. "I don't know if I can."

"Try." He pleaded

"Well, I mean yeah I love Taylor... a LOT. But ever since you kissed me it's all I've been able to think about and that scares me."

"It scares me too, Ky."

"And I just... I mean, I know Taylor loves me too and the last thing I want to do is hurt him. I hate keeping this from him; I feel like he knows but isn't saying anything."

"How could he know?" Zac asked

"Taylor and I are close. Real close. You know that. And I know that he can tell when I'm lying by looking in my eyes. He can see it."

"I think he would've said something by now, though."

"Zac it's only been two days." She reminded him, "A lot of shit can happen in the next couple days if we're not careful."

He sat down on the edge of his bed, leaning over and lying his head in his hands. "What are we supposed to do?"

Kylie went to sit next to him. She reached over to brush his long hair away from his face. He peered up at her with one eye that wasn't covered by his hands. She wasn't sure why this was happening to her. Why she was all of a sudden starting to feel things for him. "I don't know." She said, "But it amazes me that all it took was one kiss."

"To what?" He lifted his whole head up and looked her squarely in the eyes.

"To feel these things... to feel this attraction toward you."

He smiled. "I know."

"You know?"

"Yeah." He said, throwing his arm around her. "I'm just too irresistible."

"Oh baby... " Taylor groaned, "Yeah... " He let Kylie feel his erection by pressing it against her thigh. "Uh,"

Kylie closed her eyes tight and breathed deeply. "Tay... Taylor no."

"Wha...?"

"We're in the den."

"So?"

"So someone could come in at any given moment." By someone she meant Zac. The last thing she wanted at that moment was him coming in and finding them like that.

"Babe come on... " He begged

"No." She pushed him off of her and sat up, straightening out her shirt. "I'm sorry."

"We'll just go up to my room then."

"No, Taylor I... not right now."

"What's going on with you lately?" He asked, his eyes narrowing.

"I told you before!" She stood up, getting frustrated. "Nothing, okay? NOTHING."

"I believed that a couple days ago but now it seems like nothing but an excuse. I want the truth, Ky."

"I told you the truth. Nothing is going on."

"You wouldn't lie to me, would you?"

She stared at him, knowing full well he could tell if she was lying or not just by looking in her eyes. She couldn't tell him. She knew it was the right thing to do but she just couldn't. The guilt was suddenly too much for her. "I have to go." She bolted for the front door, leaving Taylor staring after her.

"KYLIE!!" He shouted, "Wait!" He stood up from the couch, taking two steps, then falling flat on his face. "Shit." He rolled over and looked down. "Damn you Avie and your Barbies."

Kylie slipped her shoes on, leaning over to quickly tie them.

"Hey, leaving are you?"

She spun around at the sound of his voice.

"I have to Zac."

He walked over to her and leaned over, his face inches from hers. "Why?" He asked quietly

"Taylor." Was all she said. She stood up and left, running home.

"Did she just leave?" Taylor asked, appearing from down the hall.

"Yeah. What'd you do to her, man?"

"Me?! I should be asking you the same question."

"Whoa, Tay, I didn't do anything, I swear." Zac saw Taylor begin to approach him. "I don't know what you want from me." He started to back up slowly.

"I want you to leave her the fuck alone. That's what I want. You're doing nothing but confusing her and I want it to stop."

"Fine."

"Is that a promise?"

Zac started into his brother’s eyes. "Yeah. It's a promise."
