.chapter seventeen.

"I hate this sweater..." Kylie gave a good tug and pulled the rest of it over her head. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. "So much for nice hair." She smoothed out her white turtleneck sweater and reached for her black pants that were sitting on her bed. She slipped into them quickly before picking up her brush and running it through her hair. She checked to make sure her make up was done to perfection, then crossed her room and grabbed her black boots. She slid her feet into them and zipped up the sides. "All done." she told herself, leaving her room and walking downstairs.

Since she still had another half an hour before she was to arrive at the Hanson's, she sat herself down on the living room couch to watch tv. After channel surfing for a few minutes, she decided to watch Lost and Found on HBO. Stupid movie, but it'll do she thought.

The phone rang, causing her to jump in her seat. "Whoa, it's just the phone..." she told herself. She reached over to the endtable and picked up the receiver. "Hello?"

"Where the hell are you?" Taylor asked, checking himself out in his mirror.

"I'm here, watching tv... why?"

"I thought I said to come over at noon?"

"No, you said 12:30. That way everyone would already be there and it wouldn't be as crowded by the door, with everyone giving hugs and kisses and asking the same questions, 'how are you? How's so-and-so?'"

Taylor laughed on his end of the line. "Yeah, okay, now I remember. But a lot of people are already here and they've made it to other parts of the house by now." he told her

"So does that mean it's safe to come now?"

"If you want to. I'm not gonna force you or anything I mean, you can still wait another fifteen minutes before you come."

"Maybe I will. I'm actually enjoying this movie." She turned and looked back at the screen.

"What movie?"

"Lost and Found, it's with David Spade."

"Oh... I see. So you coming over or what?"

"I guess I can."

"Cool, I'll be waiting."

"Alright, bye."

"Bye."

Kylie hung up the phone and reached across the couch, grabbing the remote and turning off the tv. She got up off of the couch and went to the hall closet, grabbing her leather jacket. She left seconds later, heading over to the Hanson's.

Taylor greeted her at the door when he answered it. "Hey, beautiful." He gave her a kiss on the cheek as she walked passed him, entering the foyer.

She looked around, not seeing anyone else. "Am I the last one?" she asked

"No, I think my aunt Claire is still on her way... and maybe an uncle or two, who knows."

"Kylie! My favorite relative!" Isaac exclaimed, walking down the stairs, holding his arms out to her. "Glad to see you could make it to the festivities." He wrapped her up in a hug as soon as he got to the bottom.

"I wouldn't miss a big Hanson gathering for anything." she said, pulling away

"You know," he said, glancing around, "my girlfriend is somewhere... I just don't know where."

"Angela? She's here?"

"Yep, and as soon as I find her you can see her." He walked off in search for his girlfriend.

Kylie gave a confused look. "Did I miss something?"

"I'm wondering the same thing myself. Come on, there's people here who want to see you."

* * *

"One word to describe myself, huh?" Kylie asked, taking her leather jacket Taylor was holding out to her.

"Yep."

"But you already know me, so why do I have to think of a word to describe myself?" She put her jacket on and tied the straps around her waist.

"Because everyone else had to."

"But that's because I didn't know them and Zac thought of the stupid idea, thinking it'd be a good way for me to get to know more of your relatives."

"He was just trying to help." Taylor pointed out. He opened the front door and let Kylie pass through the doorway first. "Besides," he added, stepping outside and closing the door behind him, "You found out that my cousin knows this guy who went to school with a cousin of your's. Pretty cool."

"Kinda, but I still think the whole thing was stupid."

They walked over to Taylor's Jetta that was parked in the driveway and got in. "Which theater?" he asked

"Um... the cheap one. I think Dude, Where's My Car is playing there since it didn't stay at the other one very long."

He started the car and backed out of the driveway. "Okay. I don't plan on watching the movie anyway." he glanced over at Kylie out of the corner of his eye.

She swatted him playfully. "Don't say that."

"Why not? It's true."

"Do people even realize that when they go to a movie and make out through the whole thing that it's like they're paying money to make out with eachother?" she asked

"Probably, but I think it's cool."

"I just don't see the point. Why not do it at home or something?"

"Maybe they can't."

"So do it in the backseat of a car, but not in the middle of a movie, I hate that."

"Are you trying to tell me you don't want to make out?"

"Not during the movie, no."

* * *

"Well Tay, thanks for taking me to a stupid movie. I appreciate it." They walked into Kylie's room and she took off her shoes, throwing them in the direction of her closet. "Damn, I missed." she said.

"I think you have to be in the right mood to see that movie and actually laugh at it."

"I think so too. Maybe if I'm ever really drunk, you know?"

"Yeah..." He sat down on her bed and watched as she moved about her room, starting to undress. She pulled her white sweater over her head and threw it at Taylor.

"Hold that." He raised his eyebrows at her as she unzipped her pants and slid them down her legs. She looked up at him and saw him watching her every move. She smiled and stepped out of her pants, then walked over and gave them to him. "You can hold these, too." She then stood before him in a tank top and panties. "I think I need some music." Taylor's eyes watched her walk across the room to her stereo and put a cd in. As soon as he heard the first opening line, he nodded his head.

"Ah, Nickelback."

"Damn straight. Best song is right here."

"You know what else is good?" he asked, walking over to her. His hands found their way around her waist, pulling her right up against him. He leaned his forehead against her's.

"What?"

"You." he answered simply.

"Aww..." she smiled, sliding her arms around his neck. "You really mean that?"

"Yes. You gonna give me a blow pop for saying it?"

She laughed. "No, I don't have any."

He backed his head away from her a little and looked down at her body that was barely clothed. "I like you this way." he said, trailing his hands up from around her waist to trace the outline of her bra.

"Me too." she joked, "I should dress like this more often."

"I wouldn't mind."

"I know." she said, pushing him away.

"Hey..." he pouted, reaching out to her

"Nope, I've gotta put some clothes on, even though you don't think I should." She went over to her dresser and grabbed a tank top and boxers. "These good enough?" She held them up to show him.

"I guess." he sighed

There was a knock at her door. Taylor stopped the music and gave Kylie a questioning glance. "Who is it?" Kylie asked.

"It's mom. Can I come in?"

"Uh... just a minute." She threw the tank top and boxers on quickly before going and opening her bedroom door. "Hi." she said upon seeing her mom standing on the other side. "What are you doing home?"

"Your father and I have some very important news to tell you... hello Taylor." She said, peering over Kylie's shoulder.

"Hi." he smiled

"Why don't you come down to the living room so we can talk." her mom suggested

"Can Taylor come down?"

"If he want's. We'll see you down there." She turned and walked back down the hall towards the stairs.

Kylie looked back at Taylor. "What could they possibly have to tell me now?"

"I don't know." he shrugged

"Do you want to come down?"

"Do you want me to?"

"Yeah, kinda."

"Then I will."

They walked downatairs and found her parents sitting in the living room. "What's going on?" Kylie asked as her and Taylor sat down together on the love seat.

"We um... " her mom started, looking at her husband out of the corner of her eye, "well, it's about our job."

Kylie's mind raced with all the possibilities that could come with that statement. "And...?"

"We quit it." her dad bluted out

"You... what?" Kylie stared at both her parents in complete and utter shock.

"We quit it." he repeated "We decided that it wasn't for us anymore. So we got a new job."

Kylie finally realized that this wasn't good news after all. "Oh." she said, "I thought you were going to tell me something I actually wanted to hear." She got up and motioned for Taylor to do the same. "Nice to see you again." she said, "So glad we could have this conversation. If you could even call it that."

"Kylie, stop." her mom called out, "You didn't let us finish."

She stopped walking and turned around, Taylor doing the same. "What?"

"Our new job is here."

"So how much will you be traveling this time? The same I'm sure."

"That's the difference between this one and the old one. We'll be gone at most, one week out of every month. Just short trips and only one of us has to go at a time. We we thinking of alternating months, that way one of us will be here with you."

Kylie couldn't speak. This new information about her parents cought her completely off guard. She wasn't sure how to react. She glanced up at Taylor with wide eyes.

"So... what do you think?" her mom asked

"Um... that's... great." Kylie grabbed Taylor's hand, "Excuse us, please." She dragged him up the stairs to her room. "I can't believe them!" she yelled, throwing herself back on her bed. "What, do they feel obligated to be here with me now? I mean... ugh, I just... I just... "

"Just what?" Taylor laid down next to her.

"I just hate this!"

"They're trying to be your parents, Ky. The least you can do is give them a chance."

"It's too late to be my parents now! I'm almost 18, I don't need them around anymore." There was a knock on her door. "Who is it?" she asked

"Mom."

She got up off of her bed and went to open the door. "I don't have anything to say to you right now."

"I don't know why you aren't happier about this, honey. We thought - "

"DON'T call me honey." Kylie interrupted, "You can't just come back all of a sudden and call me cute little names like honey, baby, sweetheart... whatever. I hate the fact that you chose to be a part of my life when I'm just about to the point where I don't need parents anymore. At the age of 18 I can move out. And now with you and dad here, I think I just might take that thought into serious consideration."

Kylie's mom stared at her with wide eyes. "Why are you doing this?"

"Me?! Why did you and dad abandon me for so many years? Why did you leave me all alone in this big house at a time in my life when I needed my parents the most? All I had was the Hanson's... well, Taylor mostly. He's stuck by me through everything and cared for me like no one else ever has."

"Taylor, thank you." her mom said as she looked over Kylie's shoulder at him.

He smiled and nodded. "Welcome."

"We're here now though. We want to see you everyday, do things with you like going out to eat, or you and I can go to the mall... "

"It's too damn late!" Kylie shouted, "I've told you that before!" She stood there staring at her mom for a moment.

"Kylie, please... " She reached out and tried to hug her daughter, but Kylie backed up.

"Don't, just get out."

"Please just come talk with dad and I about this." she pleaded

"No."

"Kylie... "

"I thought I told you to get out!"

Her mom glanced back and forth between Taylor and Kylie. She sighed, then turned and left the room without another word. Kylie stared at the empty doorway, feeling the tears well up behind her eyes. Taylor stood up from the bed and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Ky...?" Her bottom lip started to quiver as she stood there, trying to keep the tears from falling. Her knees felt weak all of a sudden. She shut her eyes tight, causing all her tears to fall down her cheeks. She spun around, throwing her arms around Taylor. She cried into his shoulder as he rubbed her back soothingly.

"I don't know what to do." she whimpered

"It's gonna be okay, Ky. I promise you that." He almost felt like crying himself. He hated to see her like this.

"I don't know what to do anymore... "
